Local churches continue to find ways to support Samaritan House throughout the year.

Recently, St. John Lutheran Church hosted an event that raised approximately $1,000 for Samaritan House in Washington Township. The money was raised during a joint concert Oct. 28 by choirs from St. John Lutheran Church, Ss. John and Paul Catholic Church, and the Symphonia Chorale.

Pastor Mark Evans of St. John Lutheran Church in Romeo said his church has been hosting the Harvest of Praise event for the last several years.

"We put on a concert, all the choirs sing and we have the mass choir at the end," he said. "We also take up an offering for Samaritan House. We've been doing this for three or four years."

Evans said each year the event has typically raised around $600. This year, however, the event raised more than $1,000.

"The crowd was nice, but it didn't seem any bigger than in years past," said Evans, who also serves on the Board of Directors for Samaritan House. "People must have really been inspired by the music and an understanding of what we do here."

Evans said community churches continue to support the mission of Samaritan House because the organization's activities mesh with their religious philosophy.

"Here at Samaritan House ... our Lord is the heart and we are the hands," he said. "The congregations that are involved with us, we might worship differently ... yet we are all committed because there are folks out there hurting."

Currently there are 16 churches that sponsor and support Samaritan House.

"I think it's awesome," she said. "I think this is a great sign of the times that people are working together to praise God and support Samaritan House."

Zendt said these types of donations are always vital to Samaritan House's mission.

"A thousand dollars is a lot of burgers and hot dogs and eggs and cheese," she said.
