Identifying preferences for robotic assistance

Robots have the potential to help older adults with daily activities that can become more challenging with age. But are people willing to use and accept the new technology? A study by the Georgia Institute of Technology indicates the answer is yes, unless the tasks involve personal care or social activities.

After showing adults (ages 65 to 93 years) a video of a robot's capabilities, researchers interviewed them about their willingness for assistance with 48 common household tasks. Participants generally preferred robotic help over human help for chores such as cleaning the kitchen, doing laundry and taking out the trash. But when it came to help getting dressed, eating and bathing, the adults tended to say they would prefer human assistance over robot assistance. They also preferred human help for social activities, such as calling family and friends or entertaining guests.

Georgia Tech's Cory-Ann Smarr will present the results this week at the Human Factors Ergonomics Society Annual Meeting in Boston.

"There are many misconceptions about older adults having negative attitudes toward robots," said Smarr, a School of Psychology graduate teaching assistant. "The people we interviewed were very enthusiastic and optimistic about robots in their daily lives. They were also very particular in their preferences, something that can assist researchers as they determine what to design and introduce in the home."

Smarr and Psychology Professor Wendy Rogers, the principal investigator on the project, also noticed that preferences varied across tasks, such as medication. For instance, adults said they are willing to use a robot for reminders to take medicine, but they are more comfortable if a person helps them decide which medication to take.

"It seems that older people are less likely to trust a robot with decision-making tasks than with monitoring or physical assistance," said Rogers. "Researchers should be careful not to generalize preferences when designing assistive robots."

The older adults in the study were all healthy and independent, and nearly 75 percent said they used everyday technologies such as cell phones and appliances. Many said they don't need immediate assistance. The research team is planning future studies for adults who currently need help with everyday tasks.

What are your priorities? - Social Anxiety - Support Groups

Career, Health, Relationships, Fitness.

How are you dealing with your priorities.
Are you out of balance?
What are your goals for each area?

I've been focused on my career pretty much since I was thirteen.
I've always been pretty terrible at relationships. The past few years I've put alot of time into my family. Strengthening the important bonds. And trying to rebuild bridges with my oldest and most sincere friendships. Making friends can increase the opportunities to meet girls in a casual non-threatening situation.

My health has been through rough times, mostly mental health. I was in the mental hospital in 2005. Now that I've quit smoking and am not in the hospital my health is better, but I look forward to having a full time job so I can live independently and get around freely - to that end I am buying a scooter for now and eventually a motorcycle (will probably cost about $10k.) Getting around and out and about a bit more can increase my opportunities to meet girls.

My fitness is my worst area. It's also probably my lowest priority. I have gained weight because of my medication and lack of activity. Been so focused on my writing that I don't set aside any time to work out or go for walks. I'm now 110 kgs and I need to start paying some attention to my goal to lose about 20kg.

As child reality TV star Honey Boo Boo continues to capture the attention of audiences with her boisterous personality and her own show about life on the child beauty pageant circuit, a new paper published today in the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry takes a critical look at the very types of pageants in which she and thousands of other children compete in America every year.

The paper, authored by Martina M. Cartwright, a registered dietician and adjunct professor in the University of Arizona's department of nutritional sciences, suggests that high-glitz child pageants, largely popularized by the TLC hit reality show "Toddlers and Tiaras" and its spin-off "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo," often have little to do with the children and much more to do with satisfying the needs of their parents. It further suggests that participation in such pageants can actually be harmful to children's health and self-esteem.

Cartwright, who attended two live tapings of "Toddlers and Tiaras" as part of her research, asserts that some pageant parents exhibit what she calls "princess by proxy," a unique form of "achievement by proxy distortion" in which adults are driven primarily by the social or financial gains earned by their child's accomplishments, regardless of risk involved for the child.

Cartwright focused specifically on the $5 billion glitz pageant industry, which was first made known to many in 1995, following the death of 5-year-old beauty queen Jon-Benet Ramsey.

In glitz pageants, young contestants wear heavy makeup and ornate costumes, with price tags sometimes topping $1,500. Along with entry fees, photos and other common pageant expenses like wigs, fake tans and artificial teeth known as flippers the average total cost of participating in a single glitz competition, according to Cartwright's research, runs about $3,000 to $5,000.

Prizes at stake might include cash awards, crowns, trips, puppies or even movie "bit parts." The potential for fame and fortune, Cartwright says, may contribute to "achievement by proxy distortion" in parents.

It is not uncommon for parents, especially those of young athletes, to exhibit what is known as benign "achievement by proxy," in which they experience pride and joy through their child's achievements but still recognize a child's limitations, says Cartwright, who has worked extensively with young athletes and dancers as a dietician.

"Achievement by proxy distortion," however, occurs when parents struggle to differentiate between their own need and their child's needs, and in order to achieve what they perceive as success, they may engage in risky behaviors, objectification or even abuse and exploitation of a child, elements of which Cartwright said she witnessed at the glitz pageants she attended.

"I think it's fun if they want to play dress up for a little while, but to insist on making that a career or that they're going to be a model or a Hollywood star, the chances are very slim," she said in an interview. "Parents have to know their child's limitations and not pres them beyond that because later on that knocks their self esteem."

Cartwright said she talked with pageant parents who made risky financial investments to support their child's participation, spending above and beyond the amount of the contest's top prize. She also witnessed parents putting high pressure on their young daughters to look "flawless" and win at all costs, pushing them to adopt an unnatural and adult-like physical appearance and chastising them for poor performance, lack of enthusiasm or a flawed appearance.

"Everything was based on what these kids look like and the way that these children were displayed or dressed," Cartwright said. "They were fully made up; they looked like adult women, pint-size. They were judged on personality, but none spoke a word."

The emphasis on physical perfection may put young girls at risk for adult body dissatisfaction, and potentially eating disorders, Cartwright said.

She said she also worries that the competitions sexualize young girls by encouraging them to look like grown-ups. She recalled in particular one young contestant, wearing a Playboy bunny costume, being carried onto the stage by her father, dressed as Hugh Hefner.

Cartwright is additionally concerned about the physical health of young pageant participants.

At the pageants she observed, where contestants ranged in age from 4 months to 15 years, she said tears and temper tantrums were common, with many parents denying their children naps or breaks during grueling pageant schedules for fear that sleeping might dishevel the child's appearance. She also saw several parents giving their children caffeinated beverages and Pixy Stix candy, often referred to as "pageant crack," to keep their energy levels high, with one mother declaring, "We've gone through two bags of crack and two cans of energy drink so she can stay up for crowning."

"It's concerning because when you raise toddlers, they have to be put on a schedule of some sort, with regular meals and regular naps," Cartwright said. "With the 'pageant crack' and caffeinated beverages, they're feeding them pure sugar to keep them awake. The smell in the hallways was so sweet it was like being in a carnival."

Although Cartwright doesn't advocate an outright ban on child pageants, she said she thinks it's important for people to understand the motivation for some parents to enter their children in the competitions.

"If we can understand why the parents are doing what they're doing, then we can start addressing the problem," she said. "And I think if the public understands why the parents are doing that then they won't pay as much attention to these pageants."

She also emphasized the importance of teaching young children that self-esteem is not all about looks.

"We need to talk to adults and to kids," she said, "about other ways to garner self-esteem than through appearance."

Amazon Announces Loss On LivingSocial - Business Insider

LivingSocialThe daily deal bubble continues to burst.

Latest victim Amazon, which invested in LivingSocial, a private competitor of Groupon.

In its just-announced earnings, the company says:

"Net loss was $274 million in the third quarter, or $0.60 per diluted share, compared with net income of $63 million, or $0.14 per diluted share, in third quarter 2011. The third quarter 2012 includes a loss of $169 million, or $0.37 per diluted share, related to our equity-method share of the losses reported by LivingSocial, primarily attributable to its impairment charge of certain assets, including goodwill."

To put that that into perspective, the company invested $175 million in LivingSocial. So basically, complete wipe-out.

Read the full Amazon earnings coverage here >

UPDATE: Via AllThingsD, here's the internal memo LivingSocial CEO Tim O'Shaughnessy sent out in regards to the Amazon news:

Hey all ?

This afternoon, our investor and partner Amazon.com announced its quarterly earnings. Because our financials for the quarter had a material impact on its results, Amazon included some information about our numbers in its announcement, and current estimates on some of our financials will be included in a filing that comes out tomorrow as well. This is similar to past quarters.

From those announcements, you?re likely to see news articles saying that we hurt Amazon?s earnings and lost a ton of money. That doesn?t tell the full story, so I wanted to share some more info on our third-quarter results with you, so you ? and the customers you serve ? can better understand what they mean.

First, here?s what you can glean from Amazon?s filings: We had roughly $124 million in revenue last quarter, our operating expense was approximately $193 million, and we had an operating loss of around $565 million and an overall net loss of about $566 million for the quarter.

Sounds like a lot of losses, right? Or maybe you wonder how our losses could be higher than our operating expenses? Well, what the numbers don?t fully explain is that more than 95% of our estimated losses in the quarter involved non-cash items, in particular an estimated charge of around $496 million related to the write down of ?goodwill? in acquisitions we made last year and another $45 million or so related to stock compensation and other items.

In layman?s terms, we took a charge of around $496 million because we had to revalue some of the companies we acquired last year. As you know, the market has also dropped over that same time for similar public tech companies. Those changes in valuation showed up as an ?impairment? in our financial statements, but they do not affect the day-in, day-out operations of the business.

When you look at our financial position, the story is very different. For the third quarter of 2012, our global revenue nearly doubled on a year-over-year basis. More important, for the first time since 2009, we had positive operating cash flow for our company on a global basis in the month of September. In other words, we ended the last month of the quarter with more money in the bank than we had at the beginning of the month, marking an important milestone on our path to profitability and long-term success.

The September numbers from Yipit also show strong competitive trends. From August to September, we gained a whopping six points of North American market share against Groupon, as our share jumped from 21% to 24% while theirs fell from 56% in August to 53% in September. While those numbers included our world-record-setting Starbucks deal, they also showed strong growth without it.

In the big picture, all of these trends mean that LivingSocial is gaining control over our own destiny, an enviable position for any start-up and one that allows us to aggressively execute against our vision to build the leading platform for local commerce worldwide.

I know each of you is working hard and making strong moves every day to help us reach our goals. Thanks for all your efforts.

- Tim

Northwestern's Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute among the first in the county to perform procedure

CHICAGO - Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is a condition in which the heart suddenly stops pumping blood. When this occurs, blood stops flowing to the brain and other major organs. Recent estimates show that approximately 850,000 people in the United States are at risk of SCA, and most of the people who have SCA, die from it. But, rapid treatment of SCA by using an implantable defibrillator can be lifesaving.

On September 28th, 2012, the FDA approved the world's first totally subcutaneous implantable defibrillator (S-ICD). Northwestern's Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute is one of the first 20 institutions in the country to have access to this technology. Since FDA approval, the Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute is one of the first ten places to implant in the U.S.

"The S-ICD system provides physicians with a new treatment option for patients who are at risk of sudden cardiac arrest," said Bradley Knight, MD, electrophysiologist and medical director of the Center for Heart Rhythm Disorders. "The system sits entirely below the skin without requiring the need for placing wires in the heart, which leaves the heart and blood vessels untouched."

The Boston Scientific S-ICD System has two main components. One is called the pulse generator, which powers the system, monitors heart activity and delivers a shock if needed. The other main component is the electrode. This enables the device to sense the heart rhythm and deliver shocks when necessary. Both are implanted just under the skin, providing protection without touching the heart and reliable defibrillation without transvenous wires.

"Patients who previously could not undergo the implantation of a transvenous defibrillator, now have a device option to protect them from deadly arrhythmias," said Dr. Knight.

The S-ICD system is commercially available in many countries in Europe as well as New Zealand. More than 1,400 devices have been implanted in patients around the world.

The Three Reasons for Polygamy | Psychology Today

Both candidates for the presidency owe their very existence to polygamy (1). President Obama?s father belonged to the polygamous Luo tribe. Mitt Romney?s paternal great grandfathers moved to Mexico to continue the Mormon practice of polygamy then outlawed in the U.S. So the time is ripe to ask what advantages polygamy has over monogamy.

Although plural marriage is banned in developed countries, it is surprisingly common, and popular, elsewhere with 55 percent of women sharing their husbands in Benin and an average of 16 percent of women doing so in less developed nations (2). Polygamy may be detested in developed countries but it is practiced to some degree in most societies studied by anthropologists. What did polygamy do for the Obamas and the Romneys that they could not accomplish with monogamy?

Studies in animal behavior show that polygynous mating systems (i.e., one male mating with several females) have at least three possible advantages.

Polygamy: a bird?s eye view

There are three basic reasons for polygyny in birds. First, there may be a scarcity of adult males. Second, some males may have much better genes than others which is particularly important for populations where there is a heavy load of diseases and parasites to which resistance is genetically heritable. Third, females do better by sharing a mate who defends a good territory (with plenty of food and cover) than they would by opting to be the single mate in a bad territory.

So much for birds! Do humans choose polygamy for similar reasons?

My research on 32 countries where polygamy is practiced by at least five percent of married women yielded answers (2). Polygamy increased where there was a scarcity of males in the population (first reason for birds).

Countries having a heavy infectious disease load had many more polygamous marriages (second reason for birds.) Women in disease-prone countries may prefer highly disease-resistant (i.e., physically attractive) men to father their offspring leaving less desirable men without mates. There is independent evidence that women care more about physical attractiveness in these countries and have a higher sex drive (3).

Having economic resources facilitates polygamy for humans consistent with resource-defense polygyny in birds (reason number 3). Thus, there were more polygamous wives in countries where men could monopolize wealth whether in terms of earned income or farm land (analogous to animal territories.) My findings were not new: they corroborated earlier research but used better data.

So humans turn to multiple marriage for the same three basic reasons that birds do (scarcity of males, selection for disease resistant genes, and defense of breeding territory and its economic equivalents.)

In my study, I also evaluated a number of ?explanations? for polygamy that are routinely trotted out by social scientists and other observers in developed countries who find polygamy repulsive.

Contrary to popular assumptions, multiple marriage had nothing to do with poverty, backwardness, or oppression of women (e.g., acceptance of wife-beating) in my study. Of course that begs the question as to why polygamy survives mostly in under developed countries close to the equator and why it is so unpopular in developed countries (4, see map.)

Why the developed world hates polygamy

At least three factors are critical. First, instead of a scarcity of males, developed countries have an excess thanks to better public health that saves more males than females. Second, colder winters made it impossible historically for mothers to raise children without substantial help from their husbands.

The most important reason that polygamy is out of place in the modern world is that it works best in agricultural societies where children contribute to farm labor and care of livestock (4).

Developed countries are highly urbanized and it is very difficult to raise large families in cities because children are a huge drain on finances that lasts for two decades thanks to the extent of modern education. In agricultural societies, by contrast, children defray the expense of raising them by contributing productive labor to the household economy.

Neither Romney nor Obama has any desire to discuss their polygamous background. Both are religious but they conveniently forgot the beloved patriarchs of the Old Testament like David, Solomon, and Abraham and their many wives (which neighbors were told not to covet).

Romney?s Mormon ancestors practiced polygamy but it was mainly confined to members of the church hierarchy who were wealthier than others in terms of land holdings and could maintain multiple households (bird reason number three).

Obama?s Luo ancestors likely practiced polygamy for all three bird reasons. There was a scarcity of males, local diseases were a major issue and powerful men could monopolize wealth.

The fact that both candidates are descended from recent polygamous ancestors (1) when no other Presidental candidate ever was is a remarkable instance of American diversity. It should be cherished rather than otherwise.

Ada County toddler killed because baby sitter wanted to play Xbox ...

Prosecutors told an Ada County jury Tuesday that 18-month-old Alaija Corbin had fresh injuries to her feet, ankles and shins the same night she suffered a fatal head wound. They also said the toddler was shaken with such force that she had fresh tissue damage injuries under her arms. But the worst injury was to Alaija?s head, which led to her dying a week later.

Prosecutors say all those injuries were caused by 22-year-old Jordan Everhart as he watched the toddler on Oct. 7, 2011, while her mother worked a double shift. Prosecutors told the jury that Everhart was angry because the toddler wouldn?t go to sleep.

?Alaija Corbin was beaten and murdered because her mother?s boyfriend? wanted to play video games, Ada County deputy prosecutor Jill Longhurst told the jury during opening arguments in Everhart?s first-degree murder trial. ?She wouldn?t go to bed, and she wouldn?t leave him alone. And wouldn?t let him play his Xbox.

?He struck her repeatedly, across the tops of her toes, the tops of her feet, across her ankles and even her shins.?

Longhurst didn?t tell the jury how authorities suspect the toddler got her fatal brain injury, but did say forensic tests will show that the toddler was hit by a solid object hard enough to cause a fatal brain injury.

Longhurst said that when Everhart figured out the toddler was badly hurt, he first called his mom for advice and then called the girl?s mother at work ? before he called 911.

Paramedics found the toddler unconscious and clad in a diaper on the floor of a trailer home in the 300 block of East 40th Street about 2:30 a.m. on Oct. 8, 2011. When asked by a firefighter what happened, Everhart said the toddler fell backward and hit her head. Everhart had told 911 dispatchers that a dog knocked down the toddler, Longhurst said.

Paramedics took Alaija to St. Luke?s Boise Medical Center, where she eventually died.

Defense attorney Gus Cahill told the jury Monday that Everhart is ?accused of committing a murder he didn?t commit? and said the evidence prosecutors have does not support a murder charge.

Cahill did not provide the jury an explanation for how Alaija got her injuries, but he said that many of the witnesses expected to testify against Everhart created a narrative ?after the fact.?

Cahill also told the jury that Everhart was still dealing with injuries he sustained in a house fire years before and questioned whether Everhart had the physical strength to cause the toddler?s injuries.

Cahill also said that Everhart called his mom for advice when he discovered Alaija was injured because his mom was a nurse.

Testimony in the case is expected to last for several weeks.

Longhurst told the jury that the state?s case would be made up of two parts ? a lot of testimony about the injuries the girl suffered and how those happened, and then testimony from family and friends about how the toddler was healthy and happy the last time she was seen by anybody else before she was fatally injured.

Everhart could be sent to prison for life if the jury finds him guilty of first-degree murder.

Texas Church: ?Vote for the Mormon, Not the Muslim!?

DISCUSS (0)

Posted by Matt Staggs on October 23, 2012

In what should in a just world result in an instant revocation of its tax-exempt status, the pastor of a Leakey, Texas church has endorsed Mitt Romney in the upcoming election:

The sign reads, ?Vote for the Mormon, not the Muslim! The capitalist, not the communist!?

That marquee standing outside a non-denominational church has become the talk of the town in Leakey ? about 90 miles northwest of San Antonio.

The Church in the Valley is run by Pastor Ray Miller. Miller declined an interview but did say the sign was solely his idea. He said he changes the sign weekly and this isn?t the first bold statement to be displayed.

Zynga?s Boston, Austin Layoffs Today: ?Almost Everyone Was In The Dark?

zynga logoWe have more on the backstory behind Zynga's layoffs today. None of the rank and file employees knew until this morning, although senior management had planned cuts ahead of time (just as Zynga indicated this month when it lowered its bookings estimates for the year). This morning, Zynga's senior vice president of games Todd Arnold came into the Boston office and told the studio of 50 people that the company was shutting it down. Similarly in Austin, most of the employees (about two-thirds of which were working on The Ville and one-third on Bingo), had no idea until today. We still don't have final figures on the total number of layoffs and Zynga hasn't replied to requests for comment.
