U.S. drops Iranian MEK dissident group from terrorism list

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The U.S. State Department on Friday formally removed the Iranian dissident group Mujahadin-e Khalq from its official list of terrorist organizations, but underscored serious concerns about the group which is seeking to recast itself as an Iranian opposition force.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton took the decision, effective on Friday, in view of the MEK's public renunciation of violence, the absence of confirmed acts of terrorism by the MEK for more than a decade, and their cooperation in the peaceful closure of their paramilitary base in Iraq, the State Department said in a statement.

"With today's actions, the Department does not overlook or forget the MEK's past acts of terrorism, including its involvement in the killing of U.S. citizens in Iran in the 1970s and an attack on U.S. soil in 1992," the statement said.

"The Department also has serious concerns about the MEK as an organization, particularly with regard to allegations of abuse committed against its own members."

Clinton was in New York this week for a meeting of the U.N. General Assembly. Iran on Thursday blamed the MEK, which it called "a terrorist sect," for accosting a senior Iranian diplomat in New York and condemned the U.S. decision remove the group from the terrorism list.

The MEK's Paris-based leader Maryam Rajavi, who has sought to rebrand the group as a potential opposition force in Iran, welcomed the decision.

"This designation was a gift to the mullahs' (clerical) regime, and removing it is a major blow because they understand better than anyone else the potential of the movement to operate and flourish in Iran," she told Reuters in an interview.

"This decision should put an end to a policy of appeasement which has existed for the past 15 years, and it has once again proven that wherever there is a fraction of freedom and justice our resistance will be the victorious one."

But a senior U.S. official, briefing reporters after Clinton's decision was announced, said Washington did not see the group as viable opposition or democratic movement.

"We have no evidence and we have no confidence that the MEK is an organization that can promote democratic values that we would like to see in Iran," the official said. "They are not part of our picture in terms of the future of Iran."

INTENSE LOBBYING

Officials said last week that Clinton had decided to remove the MEK from the terrorism list, but the formal announcement was made only after appropriate notification of Congress.

The U.S. decision comes after years of intense lobbying by the MEK, which had seen many of its members stranded in Iraq as the group fell out of Baghdad's favor after Saddam Hussein's downfall in 2003.

The group marshaled the support of dozens of members of Congress as well as political, government and media notables.

Public figures who have endorsed the MEK's campaign included former CIA directors R. James Woolsey and Porter Goss, former Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge, former FBI Director Louis Freeh, and Mitchell Reiss, a former State Department official who is a top foreign policy adviser to Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

Prominent Democratic Party figures who have supported the MEK have included former Pennsylvania and Vermont Governors Ed Rendell and Howard Dean. People familiar with its activities said that the MEK had paid generous fees to some of those who made speeches in support of its de-listing.

A senior U.S. official dismissed suggestions that the lobbying campaign had played a role in the group's rehabilitation.

"These decisions are made on the merit and not made to appease any group of lobbyists no matter how famous they are," the official told reporters.

"The United States government is not going to take anyone off the list if it genuinely believes that they pose an imminent threats, that they are going to commit terrorist acts, or that they are somehow wedded to violence."

LEAVING CAMP ASHRAF

The United States had repeatedly said its decision on the MEK's terrorist designation hinged partly on the group's remaining members leaving Camp Ashraf, an Iraqi base where they had lived for decades, and moving to a former U.S. military base in Baghdad from which they were expected to be resettled overseas.

Officials said this month that the final large group of dissidents had moved from Camp Ashraf to the new location, ending a long standoff with Iraqi authorities.

The group, also known as the People's Mujahideen Organization of Iran, calls for the overthrow of Iran's clerical leaders and fought alongside Saddam's forces in the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s. It also led a guerrilla campaign against the U.S.-backed Shah of Iran during the 1970s, including attacks on American targets.

Removal from the list means Washington will no longer block the group's property and interests in property in the United States and that U.S. entities may engage in transactions with the MEK without obtaining a license.

Morning letters: Quandaries for a Nobel Prize president

Libyan followers of the Ansar al-Shariah Brigades chant anti-U.S. slogans during a protest in front of the Tibesti Hotel, in Benghazi, Libya, Friday, Sept. 14, 2012, as part of widespread anger across the Muslim world about a film ridiculing Islam?s Prophet Muhammad. One of the leading suspects in an attack that killed the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans is the Libyan-based Islamic militant group Ansar al-Shariah, led by former Guantanamo detainee Sufyan bin Qumu. The group denied responsibility in a video Friday but did acknowledge its fighters were in the area during what it called a ???popular protest??? at the consulate, according to Ben Venzke of the IntelCenter, a private analysis firm that monitors Jihadist media for the U.S. intelligence community. (AP Photo/Mohammad Hannon)

NEWPORT BEACH, Ron Williams:?In 2009 President Barack Obama took a trip to Egypt to address the Islamic world. He invited the Muslim Brotherhood to his presentation, thus giving tacit approval to a terrorist organization that had been outlawed since the assassination of Anwar Sadat in 1981. The Muslim Brotherhood was founded in Egypt in 1928 with the express purpose of implementing Shariah law worldwide and to re-establish the Global Islamic State.

The ?Arab Spring,? as our president referred to the overthrow of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, was nothing more than the Muslim Brotherhood at work to gain power. After Mubarak was deposed, Yusuf al-Qaradawi, a leader in the Muslim Brotherhood movement, came out of exile in Damascus, Syria, and made an address in Cairo?s Tahir Square, which by some estimates 1 million Egyptians attended, who were protected by the Egyptian military. Recently, Egyptians took to the streets and attempted to overrun our Embassy in Cairo.

The Islamic Middle East is in flames, and this president does not have an answer on how to put the genie back in the bottle, after he popped the cork. His weak appeal to the Islamic world has only inspired the Muslim Brotherhood to openly challenge the U.S. and appeal to Muslims across the Islamic world to unite in a common cause to assert their will to achieve their goal of a Caliphate. It was not a film about Muhammad that spurred this uprising. It was orchestrated by the religious fanaticism of the Muslim Brotherhood.

The lessons of history should have taught President Obama that appeasement in the face of tyranny encourages those who want to exert their evil intentions to challenge those who lack the will to stand for liberty and for U.S. exceptionalism.

If everyone thinks the economy is our primary concern and threat to our lives, wait until Egypt, Yemen, Libya, Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, Lebanon and Syria align with the Muslim Brotherhood?s goals.

Love vs. hate

TUSTIN, Dan Van Dorpe:?Throughout Muslim countries in the Mideast, thousands have burned American flags, destroyed American property and attacked American personnel. Also, dozens of Coptic Christians in Muslim countries have been killed and their churches burned to the ground in Allah?s name.

Yet, not one Middle East embassy or mosque in America, a predominantly Christian country, has been attacked as a result of the recent Middle Eastern actions against America and against Christians.

It appears that the Islamist message is to kill infidels while the message of Christians is to love your enemy and turn the other cheek.

Caricatures of faith

ANAHEIM, Mohammed Shoaib:?Religion is a function of faith. Critique of any religion, therefore, must remain confined within the faith. Muslims do not caricature other religions.

Why should others do it to Muslims?

Lacking leadership

MISSION VIEJO, Pam McKeen:?In 2009 President Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples. The Nobel committee was influenced by a speech the president gave, reaching out to the Muslim world and to his efforts to prevent nuclear proliferation. How?s that working out?

We can?t blame him completely for this Middle East mess, anymore than we can blame former President George W. Bush for 9/11. But, we can blame Obama if he doesn?t show strong leadership and stop the mealy-mouth ?our hearts are broken? rhetoric while he continues campaigning.

No one wants another war but we do want respect, and if we have to come down hard in order to get it then so be it.

Illusionary control

YORBA LINDA, Roy Burtrum:?Now that Obama has shown us that he does not have full control of the Mideast, as he promised if he were elected, I assume that he will now blame George W. Bush for Mideast problems.

His decision to entertain the Muslim Brotherhood twice at the White House, and recently refusing Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu?s request for a meeting to discuss the current Mideast situation, is unexplainable. However, when one considers that he did attend Muslim schools when young, perhaps his decision is understandable.

It is amazing that half of the U.S. population is willing to give Obama a second term in office.

Swift justice, again?

LOS ALAMITOS, Robert Zato:?At Andrews Joint Base the president addressed the nation about the people killed in the Libya consulate. He said that we will bring the perpetrators to justice.

I?m sure that U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder has already sent out e-mails reminding everyone to read the perpetrators their Miranda rights immediately after they are captured. Then he can start planning their trials in New York City.

No Military Welcome for Transgender Americans:

The repeal of ''Don't Ask, Don't Tell'' ushered in a new era of acceptance in the armed forces for thousands of Americans. For almost two decades, the ban on out gay servicemembers was an issue fueling the LGBT-rights movement. With President Barack Obama's signature ? following a Pentagon working group, surveys, and approval from the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the secretary of defense ? the ban became a thing of the past.

But for some members of the military, the fight for acceptance is long from over. Although 2011's repeal of ''Don't Ask, Don't Tell'' opened the door for gay, lesbian and bisexual servicemembers, transgender Americans must continue life in the closet in order to serve their country.

Despite the repeal of DADT, a medical regulatory ban remains in place for those who identity as transgender. Not only is evidence of transition therapy grounds for disqualification for potential recruits, so is openly identifying as transgender, which the Pentagon considers a psychiatric condition.

Transgender veterans who transition after leaving the armed forces face other obstacles as well. Upon discharge from the military, servicemembers receive a DD-214 form with their full name. Some transgender veterans who seek to change the name on the form, which is used to secure veteran benefits, are not always able to do so.

The Department of Veterans Affairs issued a directive in June 2011 providing health care for some transgender medical needs, such as hormone treatments, but the VA does not provide sex-reassignment surgery.

''There's a lot of education that needs to be done among the public about what it means to be a transgender American, which SLDN along with our allies are working on,'' Zeke Stokes, communications director for the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, told Metro Weekly. ''But it's not something that's going to happen quickly.''

While the end of DADT was only made possible by a shift in the political climate and balance of power in Washington, Stokes says the time does not seem right for advancing for transgender equality in the military.

''The make up of this Congress doesn't lead us to believe there would be any successful congressional action,'' Stokes said.

Transgender people have faced an uphill battle educating straight and gay people alike about gender identity. Having successfully repealed DADT, many activists have shifted their focus to marriage-equality battles playing out on the state level and in the courts. Securing rights for transgender servicemembers has not been the call to arms that repeal of DADT was.

In many instances, the ''T'' in LGBT is left undefined and undiscussed, even among the gay community. In a video statement delivered during an event at the Pentagon honoring Pride month in June, Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta thanked only gay and lesbian servicemembers for their service to their country.

''Before the repeal of 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell,' you faithfully served your country with professionalism and courage,'' Panetta said. ''And just like your fellow servicemembers, you put your country before yourself. And now, after repeal, you can be proud of serving your country and be proud of who you are when in uniform.''

Although Panetta said he remains ''committed to removing as many barriers as possible to make America's military a model of equal opportunity,'' there are no plans in the foreseeable future to alter military medical regulations to allow transgender Americans to serve their country openly.

(AP) ? It was like a death in the family for Brooklyn baseball fans when their beloved Dodgers left the borough behind in 1957 for the California coast.

Times were grim for Brooklyn back then. Residents were leaving en masse for the suburbs. Crime was on the rise. And there was little hope that the borough's plight would improve.

"When the Dodgers left, it was another punch in the face to the fact that Brooklyn's best days may not be ahead, but may have been behind us," said Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, who was 12 years old at the time. "It was depressing."

After decades without a professional sports team, New York City's ascendant borough is hitting the major leagues again on Friday when the Brooklyn Nets' new arena opens to the public. The state-of-the-art, 18,000-seat arena will be officially christened Saturday night with a rap concert by Nets co-owner and native Brooklynite Jay-Z.

Just as the Dodgers' departure was a harbinger of difficult times ahead, the opening of the Barclays Center is a symbol of Brooklyn's astonishing rise in recent years as a sought-after destination for people from all over the globe.

Basketball is now the sport du jour here, not baseball. And in a stroke of irony, the new stadium was built directly across the street from the spot where Dodgers President Walter O'Malley wanted to erect a new ballpark to replace Ebbets Field, the team's home that was later demolished.

"When they left, that's when I washed my hands of baseball," said 72-year-old Fred Wilken, who was so distraught by the loss of his hometown team that he stopped watching sports altogether. "For years we supported them, we came down here. And then all of a sudden they decide to leave."

The Dodgers were the golden thread that tied Brooklyn together in those days. The fabric of the team was woven into the neighborhood. Players like Willie Mays lived nearby and played stickball with kids in the streets.

About two miles from the new Nets' Arena, the hallowed ground where Ebbets Field once stood is now a massive brick apartment building in a neighborhood of Caribbean immigrants.

"We still haven't gotten over it," admitted Ron Schweiger, Brooklyn's official borough historian, whose basement is stuffed with Dodgers memorabilia. "I tend to think they never moved. They're on an extended road trip."

Why O'Malley moved the team from Brooklyn to Los Angeles after the 1957 season was, at its core, a question of dollars and cents. O'Malley wanted the city to help subsidize the new stadium, and the city refused. Fast-forward to the present: the $1 billion Barclays Center has received millions in public money.

With its deliberately rusted steel exterior, the new arena looks like a spaceship that cruised in for a landing in Brooklyn's busiest transportation and shopping hub. There are chain stores galore. A Modell's sporting apparel store across the street is stocked with racks full of team apparel in the Nets' new black-and-white color scheme and the logo designed by Jay-Z himself. Rivalry-stirring T-shirts proclaim: "New York Divided."

The city is banking on Brooklynites' deep-rooted sense of borough pride to win over new fans. And the championship-hungry Nets are hoping their new Brooklyn home will turn the tide for a franchise that has been largely overshadowed by the New York Knicks.

But gone are the days when sports allegiances were dictated by zip code. Brooklyn is a tight-knit borough no more: It is a deeply diverse community of many nationalities and income brackets.

Large swaths of Brooklyn are actually starting to look a whole lot like Manhattan. The borough of about 2.5 million residents draws its own share of tourists who want to stroll down Brooklyn Heights' charming brownstone-lined streets or shop in Williamsburg's hipster-chic boutiques.

Celebrities live in Brooklyn now. It's home to fashionable hipsters and upscale beer gardens and well-heeled mothers pushing expensive baby strollers down the street. Brooklyn is no longer just a place to live ? it's a place to visit.

"Brooklyn had an image as the underdog upstarts, which the Dodgers exemplified," said Henry Fetter, author of "Taking on the Yankees: Winning and Losing in the Business of Baseball." ''I think Brooklyn no longer has that image. And the Nets don't necessarily exemplify that."

At the end of the day, as the wins pile up, the fans will follow. A new generation of Brooklyn children will grow up with the Nets, just as their grandparents and great-grandparents grew up with the Dodgers. But fans are a more fickle species nowadays.

A group of young men shooting hoops across the street from Ebbets Field Apartments vowed to remain loyal to the Knicks, despite being born and raised in Brooklyn.

"If they had Dwight Howard, they would've been the team of New York," said 23-year-old Mario Volcin. "They would've been the best team of New York. The Nets don't really have enough pieces."

In a winner-take-all kind of town, being second-best just doesn't cut it. And as any Dodgers fan would tell you, old loyalties die hard. But even the old-timers are willing to give this new team a chance.

"I can't see this as atonement. Too many years have gone by for that," said Schweiger, the historian. "But I definitely intend to go to a bunch of the games. In fact, I already have a Brooklyn Nets T-shirt."

Forrester Report On Customer Service - Business Insider

Consumers would rather get customer service in-person or over the phone than online, according to a report by Forrester Research.?

More than half of brick-and-mortar consumers with customer service issues go to a physical store to solve the problem, while another 30 percent pick up the phone and call, according to the report.

Even online customers are just as likely to pick up the phone or go to a store as use internet customer service such as emailing or instant-messaging.

They did this because going to a store or making a phone call is more convenient than using online methods, according to Forrester:

"For individuals looking for support, convenience is a key factor. Thirty-five percent of consumers who turned to an offline channel to resolve their problem did so because they thought it was the fastest way," the report says.

This could be a message to online retailers to stop investing so heavily in internet customer service. From the looks of this report, you're better off ramping up phone and in-store customer service.

Here's a chart showing where customers in every channel seek out customer service. Note that brick-and-mortar shoppers still make up 87 percent of customers:

A Carthaginian burial site was not for child sacrifice but was instead a graveyard for babies and fetuses, researchers now say.

A new study of the ancient North African site offers the latest volley in a debate over the primary purpose of the graveyard, long thought to be a place of sacred sacrifice.

"It's all very great, cinematic stuff, but whether that was a constant daily activity ? I think our analysis contradicts that," said study co-author Jeffrey Schwartz of the University of Pittsburgh.

The city-state of Carthage was founded in the ninth century B.C., when Queen Dido fled Phoenicia (along the eastern Mediterranean shore) for what is now Tunis, Tunisia. The empire became a powerhouse of the ancient world and fought several wars against the Romans.

When archaeologists began excavating the ancient civilization last century, they found urns with the cremated remains of thousands of babies, young goats and lambs at a graveyard called the Tophet, which had been used from 700 to 300 B.C. At its peak, the Tophet may have been bigger than a football field and had nine levels of burials.

Based on historical accounts, scientists believed Carthaginians sacrificed children at the Tophet before burying them there. For instance, the Bible describes child sacrifice to the deity Baal, worshipped by a civilization in Carthage. A Greek and a Roman historian both recount gory tales from this time period in which of priests slit the throats of babies and tossed them into fiery pits, Schwartz said. [8 Grisly Archaeological Discoveries]

However, those accounts came from Carthage's enemies. "Some of this might have been anti-Carthaginian propaganda," Schwartz told LiveScience.

In 2010 Schwartz and his colleagues used dental remains from 540 individuals to argue that the site was not primarily for ritual child slaughter, and they reiterate that stance in this month's issue of the journal Antiquity. In the new article, the researchers cite several older studies to validate their methods for estimating infant ages from tooth fragments.

The team argues that many tooth fragments found at the Tophet were actually developing tooth buds from the jaws of fetuses and stillborn babies who could not have been live sacrifices. As evidence, they showed that half of the teeth lacked a sign of birth called the neonatal line. The stress of birth temporarily halts tooth development in newborns, creating a tiny, dark line in their tooth buds; however, the line doesn't form until a week or two after birth.

Other researchers still believe the Tophet was a place for sacred killing.

"This is not a regular cemetery; the age distribution suggests they were sacrificing infants at the age of 1 month," said Patricia Smith, an anthropologist at Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

Smith's team published a 2011 paper questioning Schwartz's dental analysis. The incredible heat and pressure generated during cremation usually erase the neonatal line, she said, so its absence isn't a reliable measure of age. Schwartz's team miscalculated how much teeth shrink in cremation, leading to an underestimate of infant ages, Smith argued.

Smith also doubts Carthage would have routinely cremated stillbirths or infants. Because of sky-high infant mortality rates, babies were probably not considered people until they were at least 1 or 2 years old. The Carthaginians chopped down most of their trees to plant crops and wouldn't have used the precious wood to burn babies, she said.

"The Carthaginians were seafarers; they needed wood for ships, they needed wood for cloth, they needed wood for their tools," she said.

Performing Arts Center Chief Headhunted Out of SCV (Video)

Adam Philipson, managing director of the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center at College of the Canyons for the past five years, is leaving.

He was recruited by a headhunting firm for the position of chief executive officer of the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, N.J.

Philipson, 45, described his decision to take the job as bittersweet.

?I?ve become a part of this community,? Philipson said, during the course of increasing the visibility and stature of COC?s 886-seat theater, which opened in 2004. Philipson is only its second managing director.

But it was serendipity. Philipson?s father lives in New York, and he?s been ill. Philipson was quietly wondering whether an opportunity to move back East might present itself when the call came.

It?s also a good career move for the New York City native who came to California 25 years ago and helped launch the Broad Stage in Santa Monica as assistant director.

The Basie is a 1,555-seat theater than stages 80 shows per year, versus 18 to 20 shows at COC. (Counting academic use, the PAC at COC is busy about 200 days of the year, Philipson said.)

Built in 1924 as a vaudeville house, the Basie has ?a lot of connectivity to the community,? Philipson said. ?It?s a huge economic engine? for the town?s restaurants, hotels and shops, which fill up when there?s a performance, he said.

The Basie is run by two nonprofit boards, Philipson said, one that oversees operations and one for fundraising, and they?d been looking for a new CEO for some time. Philipson will be responsible both for operations and development (money) ? and while COC added to his operational experience, he points to his involvement with funding the Broad Stage when queried about his fundraising background.

?The show must go on,? said a press release from COC officials, who praised Philipson for leading the PAC to new heights and expanding the college?s arts education program in local schools.

?Adam?s tireless efforts and passion for the arts have helped bring in thousands of new fans to the PAC, while at the same time his K-12 Arts Education Outreach Program has meant exposure to the arts for thousands of students throughout the valley,? COC Chancellor Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook said in a statement.

?He is an incredibly talented individual,? Van Hook said. ?His commitment, drive and innovative spirit will ensure his future growth and success.?We wish him the best of times in his future endeavors.?

Philipson is expected to be sitting at his desk in New Jersey on Nov. 5. He said he and his family will be winding up things in Santa Clarita by late October. Philipson and his wife have a 2-year-old son and an 8-year-old daughter who attends Valencia Valley Elementary School.

The college has not yet said how it will fill Philipson?s position.

?It is expected that in the coming days, the college will announce an internal candidate to manage the day-to-day operations of the PAC until a new director can be found,? COC officials said.

Philipson isn?t worried.

?We?ve all grown up as a staff,? he said, and all have ?an understanding of the vision. It will be an easier fit than when I entered.?

Human brains share a consistent genetic blueprint and possess enormous biochemical complexity

ScienceDaily (Sep. 19, 2012) ? Scientists at the Allen Institute for Brain Science reported in the latest issue of the journal Nature that human brains share a consistent genetic blueprint and possess enormous biochemical complexity. The findings stem from the first deep and large-scale analysis of the vast data set publicly available in the Allen Human Brain Atlas.

The results of this study are based on extensive analysis of the Allen Human Brain Atlas, specifically the detailed all-genes, all-structures survey of genes at work throughout the human brain. This dataset profiles 400 to 500 distinct brain areas per hemisphere using microarray technology and comprises more than 100 million gene expression measurements covering three individual human brains to date. Among other findings, these data show that 84% of all genes are expressed somewhere in the human brain and in patterns that are substantially similar from one brain to the next.

"This study demonstrates the value of a global analysis of gene expression throughout the entire brain and has implications for understanding brain function, development, evolution and disease," said Ed Lein, Ph.D., Associate Investigator at the Allen Institute for Brain Science and co-lead author on the paper. "These results only scratch the surface of what can be learned from this immense data set. We look forward to seeing what others will discover."

Key Findings

The results of this study show that, despite the myriad personalities and cognitive talents seen across the human population, our brains are more similar to one another than different. Individual human brains share the same basic molecular blueprint, and deeper analysis of this shared architecture reveals several further findings:

  • Neighboring regions of the brain's cortex -- the wrinkly outer rind -- are more biochemically similar to one another than to more distant brain regions, which has implications for understanding the development of the human brain, both during the lifespan and throughout evolution.
  • The right and left hemispheres show no significant differences in molecular architecture. This suggests that functions such as language, which are generally handled by one side of the brain, likely result from more subtle differences between hemispheres or structural variation in size or circuitry, but not from a deeper molecular basis.
  • Despite controlling a diversity of functions, ranging from visual perception to planning and problem-solving, the cortex is highly homogeneous relative to other brain regions. This suggests that the same basic functional elements are used throughout the cortex and that understanding how one area works in detail will uncover fundamentals that apply to the other areas, as well.

In addition to such global findings, the study provides new insights into the detailed inner workings of the brain at the molecular level -- the level at which diseases unfold and therapeutic drugs take action.

  • 84% of all genes are expressed, or turned on, somewhere in the human brain.
  • Many previously uncharacterized genes are turned on in specific brain regions and localize with known functional groups of genes, suggesting they play roles in particular brain functions.
  • Synapse-associated genes -- those related to cell-to-cell communication machinery in the brain -- are deployed in complex combinations throughout the brain, revealing a great diversity of synapse types and remarkable regional variation that likely underlies functional distinctions between brain regions.

"The tremendous variety of synapses we see in the human brain is quite striking," said Seth Grant, FRSE, Professor of Molecular Neuroscience at the University of Edinburgh and collaborating author on the study. "Mutations in synaptic genes are associated with numerous brain-related disorders, and thus understanding synapse diversity and organization in the brain is a key step toward understanding these diseases and developing specific and effective therapeutics to treat them."

How to travel 'Gangnam style'

An aerial view of Gangnam, an affluent district of Seoul, South Korea.

By A. Pawlowski, NBC News contributor

You may not know it, but a destination is emerging as one of the stars of the viral hit ?Gangnam Style.?

The quirky music video has been viewed more than 150 million times on YouTube since mid-July, propelling South Korean rapper Psy ??who was a presenter last week at the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards ??to international celebrity status and launching a dance craze that?s made it socially acceptable for adults to ride imaginary horses in public.

But while lots of fans are aware Psy is singing about a place, many are still wondering: Where exactly is Gangnam and what is its style?

It?s a question that?s music to the ears of Korean tourism officials who are suddenly facing massive interest in Gangnam ? a wealthy district of Seoul.

?People want to know: What is there to see? What is there to do?? said Luis Maravi, marketing manager at the Korea Tourism Organization in New York.

?The video has been incredibly popular. It?s just great ? opening doors to people who otherwise may not know or be even interested about learning about this area.?

Gangnam literally means ?south of the river,? referring to its location relative to the Han River, which flows through the South Korean capital. The district has often been called the ?Beverly Hills of Seoul? for its high-end fashion, fine dining and posh stores selling luxury brands.

It?s also home to famous cosmetic surgeons, attracting visitors who come to the area to undergo plastic surgery, said Andrea Choi, a researcher at the Korean Cultural Center in Washington, who lived in Seoul for more than a decade.

As the number of affluent families has grown in Gangnam, so has the glitz factor. (Psy?s video actually makes fun of all that money and conspicuous consumption.)

?It?s basically for your dinner appointments, or where to hang out with friends. A lot of people go there because it?s where all the famous restaurants are and the hangout places,? Choi said. ?The center of attention just kind of drifted towards that direction.?

The Apgujeong-dong neighborhood of Gangnam boasts trendy eateries and shops.

For the best shopping, head to the Apgujeong-dong and Cheongdam-dong neighborhoods, the Korea Tourism Organization suggests, in a sample tour officials put together in response to the popularity of the ?Gangnam Style? video.

Choi also likes visiting the ginkgo tree-lined Garosu-gil, a street known for its fine boutiques and eateries specializing in Asian fusion fare.

?So instead of chocolate fondue, you?ll find sweet red bean porridge fondue,? she said.

Gangnam?s food-related attractions include the Kimchi Museum devoted to the traditional Korean pickled dish. This is the place to learn about the history of kimchi, how it?s made and why it?s good for you. There are even kimchi tasting rooms and the chance to buy your own supply in the gift shop.

The Cheongdam-dong neighborhood of Gangnam is the home of high-end stores and boutiques.

The museum is located within COEX, one of the few malls in South Korea ? a country that otherwise doesn?t have a big mall culture, Choi said.

If fashion is more your thing, check out the Simone Handbag Museum, which opened in Gangnam in July and displays hundreds of purses dating from the 16th?century to the present.

For visitors seeking to connect to Seoul?s past, there?s the Bongeunsa Temple, built in 794 and home to thousands of Buddhist scriptures.

Wherever you go in Gangnam, be prepared to spend lots of money and dress well to blend in.

?In Seoul, as a city in general, people are very fashion sensitive, but the epitome of it would be Gangnam,? Choi said.

Smartphone Owners Worry About Mobile App Security [STUDY]

Mobile phone owners might have a reason to worry about their privacy, or at least they feel like they do. According to a new Pew Research study, nearly one-third of mobile phone owners have experienced losing their cellphone or having it stolen. And 12% said their phone has been accessed in a way that made them feel like their privacy was invaded.

These privacy worries have caused more than half (54%) of mobile app users to not download an app after they read what information the app had to access, and 33% of mobile app users went so far as to uninstall an app once they learned what information it was accessing. This goes for both Android and iPhone users.

?As mobile applications become an increasingly important gateway to online services and communications, users? cell phones have become rich repositories that chronicle their lives,? Mary Madden, research associate for the project and a co-author of the report, said in a press release. ?The way a mobile application handles personal data is a feature that many cellphone owners now take into consideration when choosing the apps they will use.?

Across demographics, the concern for protecting personal information on mobile apps was consistent. It seems all smartphone owners take steps to avoid any information breaches ? backing up contacts and files, clearing their browser history and turning off location-tracking features. But despite these precautions, ?smartphone owners are also twice as likely as other cell owners to have experienced someone accessing their phone in a way that made them feel like their privacy had been invaded,? the Pew report states. ?Owners of smartphones and more basic phones are equally likely to say their phone has been lost or stolen.?

People ages 18-24 are the most likely age group to lose their smartphone or have it stolen (45%), or have it accessed in a way that compromised their data (24%).

?The wealth of intimate details stored on smartphones makes them akin to the personal diaries of the past?the information they contain is hard to replace if lost, and potentially embarrassing in the wrong hands,? Aaron Smith, a research associate with the project and report co-author, said in a press release.

This information was gathered by the Pew Research Center?s Internet & American Life Project via telephone from March 15-April 3, 2012 among 2,254 adults ages 18 and over, including surveys in English and Spanish and on both landlines and cellphones.

How much personal information are you comfortable putting on your cellphone? Tell us in the comments.
