Build Your Own System to Power On Your Computer Remotely

Build Your Own System to Power On Your Computer RemotelyIf you're ever away from home and need to get access to your files, your computer needs to be on. If your home computer is on a wireless network, this can cause a bit of a problem. However, Instructables user hymelsr shows off how to build a system to power your computer on with off-the-shelf components.

We've covered how to power on your computer remotely with Wake On LAN before, but in order for Wake-on-LAN to work, your computer needs a wired connection. Hymelsr's build works over Wi-Fi. You need an Electric Imp Wi-Fi SD card, a breakout board, breadboard, USB, and few other miscellaneous components. You also need a smartphone to tap into the system from afar.

Once you have everything in your hand, you need to configure the Electric Imp with a set of code, and then wire the whole system into your PC's power supply. It's a relatively simple process, but does require some basic soldering. The end result is the ability to power on your computer so you can access it remotely even if it's not on a wired connection. If you're looking for way to set up remote access, we've got you covered. Otherwise, head over to Instructables for a detailed guide and list of parts.
