VIVIAN Sorbello has every reason to smile.

A week after she died twice in the back of an ambulance the Kenthurst mother-of-three was back home enjoying life with her family.

For the Hills paramedics who saved her life she is a poster girl of why you should never ignore chest pains or, as in her case a shoulder pain she thought was a pinched nerve.

Mrs Sorbello just thought an active few days on the beach had triggered the pain and when her husband Vince and 14-year-old son Frank headed to Menai for football she decided to meet some friends at Galston Pool.

"I did a few laps but it didn't feel right. I felt cold, I vomited and then felt agitated and then I vomited again," she said.

Knowing she might be in trouble she drove to the nearest medical centre which was shut and then headed to the Castle Hill Medical Centre on Old Northern Rd.

"I knew something was wrong. I was throbbing."

As soon as she got to the medical centre they called an ambulance.

The ECG details were transmitted straight to Westmead Hospital where the cardiac team were waiting for her.

Her heart stopped twice on the way.

"I remember walking to the ambulance, the paramedic was so wonderful but then he was yelling at me to open my eyes and look at him ... I don't remember anything else," she said.

Although she had two partial blockages the cause of her near death was a rare spontaneous coronary artery dissection, a tear in the lining of her artery.

She said she didn't dial 000 immediately because she didn't want to cause a fuss.

"Don't do what I did, just call an ambulance straight away," she said. "If this had happened at home I don't think I would be here today."

She plans to visit the doctor and paramedics herself to tell them how grateful she is.
