Dan Toler performing in 1986.
By Randee Dawn, TODAY contributor
Onetime Allman Brothers Band guitarist Dan Toler died on Monday of Lou Gehrig's disease in Sarasota, Fla., his official website is reporting.?
Toler was a member of the band from 1979-82, and his age has been reported variously as "in his early 60s" (according to manager Glen Halverson, who spoke to?Reuters), 64 (according to the Sarasota Herald-Tribune) and 65 (according to Rolling Stone). Toler (also known as "Dangerous Dan") played on the albums "Enlightened Rogues," "Reach for the Sky" and "Brothers of the Road."?
He and his late brother, drummer David "Frankie" Toler, were members of other bands as well, including Dickey Betts & Great Southern. Both played with the Gregg Allman Band in the 1980s.
In 2009, Dan Toler paired with John Townsend for the Toler/Townsend Band, which released a self-titled independent album that year.
"His ability to make people laugh and feel good and happy was amazing," former bandmate Chaz Trippy told the Herald-Tribune. "That smile of his is just a force of life and, God, how he loved playing that guitar."?
After his brother died in 2011, Toler announced he had been diagnosed with the degenerative nerve disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, which is often known as Lou Gehrig's disease.
Fellow musician and longtime friend Bonnie Bramlett told the Sarasota Herald-Tribune: "To see how Danny walked tall through that disease and play guitar so beautifully with his blue eyes burning (during a November 2011 benefit), what a hero.... He really showed people how to live, and how to die."
Toler is survived by his wife Debbie and their daughter Danielle Franz. A public memorial/celebration is slated to honor him in Sarasota on March 9.

Looking to buy a new car, truck or crossover? You may find it more difficult to stretch the household budget than you expected, according to a new study that finds median-income families in only one major U.S. city actually can afford the typical new vehicle.
The typical new vehicle is now more expensive than ever, averaging $30,550 in 2012, according to TrueCar.com data, and heading up again as makers curb the incentives that helped make their products more affordable during the recession when they were desperate for sales.
According to the 2013 Car Affordability Study by Interest.com, only in Washington, D.C., could the typical household swing the payments, the median income there running $86,680 a year. At the other extreme, Tampa was at the bottom of the 25 large cities included in the study, with a median household income of $43,832.
The study looked at a variety of household expenses, such as food and housing, and when it comes to purchasing a new vehicle, it considered more than just the basic purchase price, down payment and monthly note, factoring in such essentials as taxes and insurance.
Bottom line? A buyer in the capital can purchase a car with a sticker price of $31,940, slightly more than the new vehicle average for the 2013 model year and about what it would cost for a mid-range Ford Fusion sedan or a stripped-down BMW X1 crossover. The buyer in Tampa? They?ll just barely cover the cost of a basic Kia Rio, with $14,516 to spend.

?If you live in New York City or San Francisco, you?re probably going to have to pay a lot for housing, but you don?t have to pay a lot for a car,? said Mike Sante, the managing editor of Interest.com, a financial decision-making website.
Affordability has been a matter of growing concern for the auto industry in recent years as prices have continued to move upward. Even the most basic of today?s cars are generally loaded with features that were once found on high-line models a few decades back ? if they were available at all ? such as air conditioning, power windows, airbags and electronic stability control, as well as digital infotainment systems. They also have to meet ever tougher federal safety, emissions and mileage standards that have added thousands to the typical price tag.
?The average compact car of today has the features of a midsize model somebody might be trading in ? but it may be just as expensive,? said David Sargent, director of automotive operations for J.D. Power and Associates.
That is one reason why many buyers have been downsizing in recent years, said Bill Fay, general manager of Toyota, though he added that ?there is still a lot of affordability in the marketplace.?
Perhaps, but industry planners have come to recognize that they are targeting a much smaller segment of the American public than in decades past. That?s one reason why most manufacturers are offering more downsized models.
More from The Detroit Bureau: Consumer Reports names its 'Top Picks'
They also are working with their dealers to offer certified pre-owned programs where buyers can stretch their budget by purchasing a two- or three-year-old vehicle that has gone through an extensive inspection and, if necessary, repairs and replacements. Such vehicles may cost slightly more than a conventional used model but usually include a like-new warranty.
While the typical new vehicle will likely nudge up this year, Interest.com editor Sante stressed that car costs are one of the most controllable parts of a household?s budget. ?You?re better off driving something more affordable and saving or investing the difference.?
If the typical new car costs $30,550, with an average monthly payment of $550, the five cities most able to meet ? or come close ? are:
1) Washington, D.C.
Average Household Income: $86,680
Affordable Purchase Price: $31,940
Maximum monthly payment: $628

Maximum monthly payment: $468
5) Minneapolis
Average Household Income: $63,352

At the other end of the scale, those five cities least able to handle a car payment are:
21) Phoenix

LUXOR, Egypt (AP) -- A hot air balloon flying over Egypt's ancient city of Luxor caught fire and crashed into a sugar cane field on Tuesday, killing at least 19 foreign tourists in one of the world's deadliest ballooning accidents and handing a new blow to Egypt's ailing tourism industry.
The casualties included French, British, Belgian, Hungarian, Japanese nationals and nine tourists from Hong Kong, Luxor Governor Ezzat Saad told reporters. Three survivors ? two British tourists and the Egyptian pilots ? were taken to a local hospital, but one of the Britons later died of injuries.
Egypt's civil aviation minister, Wael el-Maadawi, suspended hot air balloon flights and flew to Luxor to lead the investigation into the crash.
The balloon, which was carrying 20 tourists and a pilot, was landing after a flight over the southern town, when a landing cable got caught around a helium tube and a fire erupted, according to an investigator with the state prosecutor's office.
The balloon then shot up in the air, the investigator said. The fire set off an explosion of a gas canister and the balloon plunged some 300 meters (1,000 feet) to the ground, according to an Egyptian security official. It crashed in a sugar cane field outside al-Dhabaa village just west of Luxor, 510 kilometers (320 miles) south of Cairo, the official said.
The official and the investigator spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.
Bodies of the dead tourists were scattered across the field around the remnants of the balloon. An Associated Press reporter at the crash site counted eight bodies as they were put into body bags and taken away. The security official said all 18 bodies have been recovered.
Hot air ballooning is a popular pastime for tourists in Luxor, usually at sunrise to give a dramatic view over the pharaonic temples of Karnak and Luxor and the Valley of the Kings, a desert valley where many pharaoh, notably King Tutenkhamun, were buried.
Luxor has seen crashes in the past. In 2009, 16 tourists were injured when their balloon struck a cellphone transmission tower. A year earlier, seven tourists were injured in a similar crash.
The toll puts the crash among the deadliest involving a recreation hot air balloon. In 1989, 13 people were killed when their hot air balloon collided with another over the Australian outback near the town of Alice Springs.
Among the dead Tuesday was a Japanese couple in their 60s, among four Japanese who were killed, according to the head of Japan Travel Bureau's Egypt branch, Atsushi Imaeda.
In Hong Kong, a travel agency said nine of the tourists that were aboard the balloon were natives of the semiautonomous Chinese city. There was a "very big chance that all nine have perished," said Raymond Ng, a spokesman for the agency. The nine, he said, included five women and four men from three families.
They were traveling with six other Hong Kong residents on a 10-day tour of Egypt.
Ng said an escort of the nine tourists watched the balloon from the ground catching fire around 7 a.m. and plunging to the ground two minutes later.
In Britain, tour operator Thomas Cook confirmed that two British tourists were killed in the crash, and a third later died in the hospital. Another British survivor and the Egyptian pilot, who state media said had severe burns, were being treated in the hospital.
"What happened in Luxor this morning is a terrible tragedy and the thoughts of everyone in Thomas Cook are with our guests, their family and friends," said Peter Fankhauser, CEO of Thomas Cook UK & Continental Europe. He said the firm is providing "full support" to the victims' families.
In Paris, a diplomatic official said French tourists were among those involved in the accident, but would give no details on how many, or whether French citizens were among those killed. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to be publicly named according to government policy. French media reports said two French tourists were among the dead but the official wouldn't confirm that.
Egypt's tourism industry has been decimated since the 2011 uprising and the political turmoil that followed and continues to this day. Luxor's hotels are currently about 25 percent full in what is supposed to be the peak of the winter season.
Scared off by the turmoil and tenuous security following the uprising, the number of tourists coming to Egypt fell to 9.8 million in 2011 from 14.7 million the year before, and revenues plunged 30 percent to $8.8 billion.
Magda Fawzi, whose company operates four luxury Nile River cruise boats to Luxor, said she expects the accident will lead to tourist cancellations. Tour guide Hadi Salama said he expects Tuesday's accident to hurt the eight hot air balloon companies operating in Luxor, but that it may not directly affect tourism to the Nile Valley city.
Poverty swelled at the country's fastest rate in Luxor, which is highly dependent on visitors to its monumental temples and the tombs of King Tutankhamun and other pharaohs. In 2011, 39 percent of its population lived on less than $1 a day, compared to 18 percent in 2009, according to government figures.
In August, Egypt's Islamist President Mohammed Morsi flew to Luxor to encourage tourism there, about a month after he took office and vowed that Egypt was safe for tourists.
"Egypt is safer than before, and is open for all," he said in remarks carried by the official MENA news agency at the time. He was referring to the security situation following the 2011 ouster of autocratic leader Hosni Mubarak.
Deadly accidents caused by poor management and a decrepit infrastructure have taken place since Morsi took office. In January, 19 Egyptian conscripts died when their rickety train jumped the track. In November, 49 kindergarteners were killed when their school bus crashed into a speeding train because the railway guard failed to close the crossing.
The Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt's most powerful political force and Morsi's base of support, blames accidents on a culture of negligence fostered by Mubarak.

Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke began his two-day semi-annual testimony before Congress this morning. There's no telling what the nation's elected officials will ask him, but it's a pretty safe bet that the country's highest ranking unelected official will shed little fresh light on the subject that's of most concern to investors right now. Specifically, when will the Fed stop it's QE bond buying program and begin to start unraveling its $3 trillion balance sheet.
It's a question that until recently was being tied to inflation and unemployment targets, but it now is also one that has gained new found life, following the most recent release of the minutes from the Fed's last meeting.
"I am not expecting him to say anything new about what is going to happen," says Fil Zucchi, senior writer at Minyanville, in the attached video. As much as he says the Fed is clearly paying attention to the markets following the two-day slump that followed the minutes, he does not expect any change in policy anytime soon. But that's not to say he isn't worried.
"I am somewhat concerned that our economy, for better or for worse, may be heading down the path where it relies on artificially low rates," Zuchhi says, adding that he thinks it's going to be "very very difficult for the Fed to work its way out of it balance sheet without causing some serious problems."
As he sees it, the front line in this battle is not the bond market or interest rates, it's currency."The dollar is, in fact, the whole thing," Zucchi says, adding that he "thinks Bernanke probably goes to sleep every night thinking about if he is going to wake up with the same dollar that he had today, and that's his big worry."
As much as Bernanke has commented that the problem is manageable, Zucchi is unconvinced.
"Debt bubbles ultimately end, in fiat currencies, when the trust that outside investors have evaporates." It is not only something that has happened before, it is also the kind of crisis that tends to happen rather quickly when it does.
"It's a question of confidence and nothing more than that because there is really nothing behind the dollar to back it up since we went off the gold standard," adding, at some point, "the U.S. emperor is going to be shown to have no clothes and when that happens, it's everybody for themselves."
So despite friendly communiques from the G7 and G20 renouncing foreign exchange intervention, not to mention decades of ''strong dollar" proclamations from the highest levels of government, if Bernanke loses his fight to weaken the dollar, he loses the war. It really is that simple.

An Asian weaver ant (Oecophylla smaragdina) can dangle a weight more than 100 times heavier than itself without losing its grip on the surface above it.
Credit: ? Thomas Endlein
An Asian weaver ant boasts not one but two superpowers: Its extreme sticking power comes with extraordinarily quick emergency grip protection, researchers have discovered.
The ants nest in trees, which they hold onto with their moist, expandable foot pads. The moisture isn?t a glue, but it lets the foot pads hold tight using capillary forces, the same phenomenon that allows water-soaked paper towels to cling to a window. When a branch quivers in the wind, an ant?s foot pads expand, strengthening their grip. By observing the pads of ant feet as the surface they stood on shook, Thomas Endlein of Scotland?s University of Glasgow discovered that the foot pad expansion occurs within a millisecond of the jolt.
The fastest known nerve response takes five or 10 milliseconds, so the quick grip must be mechanical. Too fast to be a reflex, it?s a preflex, Endlein and a colleague report online February 27 in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

There are some pairings that seem inevitable, and David Bowie's inclusion of Oscar-winning actress Tilda Swinton in his newest music video, "The Stars (Are Out Tonight)" is just such a one. The actress, who made an early career splash as the gender-shifting title character in 1989's "Orlando" seems just the right kind of otherworldly face to appear in a video by the Thin White Duke, who for much of his career has affected an androgynous look.
That said, here's the surprise: Initially, Swinton's done up in true girly-girl fashion as Bowie's wife, seen in a fluffy blonde wig and neck-scarf, sidling up behind him in a convenience store and offering a peck on the cheek. But as the video progresses and the pair are haunted by younger lookalikes, a transformation occurs.?

However, in recent times the introduction of the internet has meant that the traditional PBX has evolved to be data dependent. So what does this hold for our legacy systems?
With new innovations and developments, VoIP is quickly emerging as the leading communications technology, with traditional premise based solutions sure to become a thing of the past. Many businesses still operate with a premise PBX, but most are switching to hybrids.
Early business communication relied on the phone system as a staple part of any organisation and a primary mode of contact, it was considered secure and reliable. However, now we have hosted and VoIP based systems that have greatly evolved as enterprise class systems, just as reliable ? if not more ? than analogue solutions.
These solutions work in conjunction with the internet, providing more features and channels to better reach customers and deliver value. Market reports predict that hosted phone systems will soon dominate the communications industry. This is partly to do with its cheaper costs that allow small businesses to invest in what was previously considered to be big business technology.
The largest market to take advantage of hosted solutions is the small business sector as service providers are able to offer these phone systems at significantly lower costs. As a hosted PBX system (different to a VoIP/IP based solution) does not require users to purchase and maintain expensive hardware or equipment ? saving costs on electricity, suppliers and support, this makes it a lucrative proposition to any sized organisation.
VoIP and hosted phone systems further offer a significant advantage in the affordability of calls made or received, as the calls are made over a data connection and not via the PSTN. All calls are treated as local calls and work out a lot cheaper, especially if you wish to expand overseas or have a large proportion of international customers/affairs.
PBX stands for Private Branch Exchange, which is a private telephone network used within a business. The users of this PBX share a number of outside lines capable of making external phone calls - these phone calls are carried out over the public switched telephone network (PSTN).
There are now three main types of PBX phone systems:
? Traditional PBX/Analogue PBX
Traditional PBX or analogue phone systems exist as a physical exchange box on your company's premises. The overall costs of this type of PBX phone system may seem higher than other systems, but due to scaling and costs calculated per employee the price actually decreases with the number of ports required.
Here, a phone box is used that connects all the on-site phone lines (ISDN lines), the costs are usually higher due to installation, down time, maintenance and support. As traditional PBX systems tend to be more complex and bespoke it requires certified engineers to fix any issues.
Many businesses prefer to operate on traditional PBX phone systems with their own in-house overheads. Usually this is in the form of a comms room that is looked after by your IT team, it also gives you full ownership of the hardware unlike in other PBX solutions.
? Hosted PBX
As telephony has advanced significantly over recent years, the trouble with installing a traditional or analogue PBX system is that it starts losing value as soon as it goes on the wall.
Adding new features to PBX systems requires significant engineering in the central PBX, this can often mean that if you are fast growing and require urgent applications this could be very timely and cause losses for your organisation. With a hosted PBX or ?virtual phone system?, adding new features is as easy as downloading a new plugin for your web browser.
You can still have all of the same benefits of a PBX but your exchange box is located and serviced virtually by the telecoms provider. Hosted PBX phone systems are the best phone systems for small businesses as they do not require an in-house IT team to manage or maintain any hardware.
? VoIP/IP PBX
An IP PBX phone system is what is also known as a VOIP system (Voice over IP) and delivers voice or video over a data connection. It can also interoperate with the traditional PSTN.
The IP PBX will convert the voice in to data and transfer it across the network as packets. Using data networks for voice can significantly reduce the cost of long distance, and international phone calls; and considerably reduce the overheads of traditional line rentals.
An IP PBX solution is also able to switch calls between VoIP and traditional telephones while still offering the same functionality of your traditional PBX phone system. It is different from a hosted or cloud based solution as the IP PBX is owned by the business, just as with a traditional PBX. It can exist as a hardware or software-only solution.
As Cloud technology gains momentum and continues to acquire market share this will no doubt cause an insurgence in hosted PBX investments. Currently, large call centres are three times more likely to have a Cloud-based solution than medium sized ones, but I suspect that this will soon change.
It?s not just cost savings that are driving people to invest in IP or hosted technology, as modern working environments have also evolved these phone systems fit perfectly into our changed attitudes and approaches to the working day. With options for remote working and mobile working we create an office that does not exist or depend on a physical location.
As our business needs continue to change, so will the technology. It is due to this fact that I feel the presence of the phone system in its physical form will continue to decline, and will not be around in 10-20 years? time.

Machine-to-machine (M2M) technologies could help reduce global GHG emissions by 9.1 billion metric tons by 2020, equivalent to 18.6 percent of global GHG emissions in 2011, according to a report by AT&T and the Carbon War Room.
?M2M? refers to technologies that facilitate connectivity of physical infrastructure and devices ? the so-called industrial internet, or internet of things. This will reduce the amount of energy and fuel required to perform tasks, thus lowering GHG emissions without restricting production or economic growth, the report explains.
Machine-to-Machine Technologies: Unlocking the Potential of a $1 Trillion Industry says global M2M device adoption will skyrocket between now and 2020, from 1.3 billion to 12.5 billion devices, and says larger enterprises are adopting M2M at a greater rate than small and medium businesses (see chart).
These technologies will also make society more efficient, which the report says is a ?money-making endeavor.? The report predicts connected machines will generate cost savings and new revenues that could add $10-$15 trillion to global GDP.
By 2020, M2M applications look most promising and profitable in four sectors, according to the report. These are:
But a lack of universal standards for M2M applications and hardware and a lack of performance data, in addition to marketing challenges and a long sales cycle, present barriers to scaling M2M technologies, the report found.
To overcome these barriers, the report suggests convening experts to work on universal standards. It also recommends that companies offering M2M technologies build data collection and analytics into their offerings, and create new business models and sales strategies.
In a report published in late 2012, GE said the industrial internet could boost energy efficiency and account for more than $82 trillion in economic activity by 2025, Energy Manager Today reports.

Researchers have demonstrated a flat, "stretchy" battery that can be pulled to three times its size without a loss in performance.
While flexible and stretchable electronics have been on the rise, powering them with equally stretchy energy sources has been problematic.
The new idea in Nature Communications uses small "islands" of energy-storing materials dotted on a stretchy polymer.
The study also suggests the batteries can be recharged wirelessly.
In a sense, the battery is a latecomer to the push toward flexible, stretchable electronics. A number of applications have been envisioned for flexible devices, from implantable health monitors to roll-up displays.
But consumer products that fit the bendy, stretchy description are still very few - in part, because there have been no equally stretchy, rechargeable power sources for them.
"Batteries are particularly challenging because, unlike electronics, it's difficult to scale down their dimensions without significantly reducing performance," said senior author of the study John Rogers of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
S for stretch"We have explored various methods, ranging from radio frequency energy harvesting to solar power," he told BBC News.
In recent years, Prof Rogers worked with colleagues at Northwestern University, focusing on stretchy electronics of various sorts made using what they termed a "pop-up" architecture. The idea uses tiny, widely spaced tiny circuit elements embedded within a stretchy polymer and connected with wires that "popped up" as the polymer was stretched.
But batteries do not lend themselves to this idea; traditionally they are much larger than other circuit elements. They could be made from smaller elements wired together, but to create a small battery with sufficient power, the elements must be spaced more closely than those of the pop-up circuits.
The team's new idea was to use "serpentine" connections - wires that loop back on themselves in a repeating S shape, with that string of loops itself looped into an S shape.
Stretching out the polymer in which the tiny solar cells were embedded first stretches out the larger S; as it is stretched further, the smaller turns straighten - but do not become taut, even as the polymer was stretched to three times its normal size.
The team says the stretchy battery can be charged "inductively" - that is, wirelessly over a short distance. Prof Rogers said that the uses for such batteries and the stretchy circuits they power were myriad.
"The most important applications will be those that involve devices integrated with the outside of the body, on the skin, for health, wellness and performance monitoring," he explained.
However, the prototype batteries described in the paper were only run through 20 charge/discharge cycles, and Prof Rogers said that "additional development efforts to improve the lifetime will be required for commercialisation".

The financial crisis in the West has central banks buying up large amounts of gold to hedge against devaluing reserve currencies, a practice that could effect a shortage in the global gold supply, reports Gold Price.
New York, NY (PRWEB) February 25, 2013
In response to the economic stimulus programs employed by the world?s most powerful governments, central banks in many developing countries are transferring their holdings into gold, as the metal is considered a more tangible asset than reserve currencies that are being devalued in the ongoing currency war. According to reports from the World Gold Council, central bank buying accounted for 534.6 tons in 2012. Quite the shift from the previous trend of central banks selling 400 tons a year, accounting for over 900 tons in a 4,000 ton market. Among the new players in the central bank buying game were Latin American countries including Brazil, Paraguay, Venezuela and Mexico. Russia, South Korea and the Philippines held their status of recent big buyers, and Iraq made an appearance onto the scene last year, buying 24.1 tons of gold.Arthur McGuire, Vice President of Gold Price, says, ?As the world?s most powerful central banks print money without restraint, up-and-coming central banks all over the world are starting to realize that they don?t want to hold money that is being devalued and set to see hyperinflation in the future. China and India have been buying vast amounts of gold for years, but now we?re seeing smaller countries jump on the bandwagon, and this shift could cause a shortage soon. We?re recommending that investors buy gold coins and bars now, while prices are low compared to what they could rise to if we end up seeing a significant shortage of physical gold supply.?

Oscar night was a good time for Ben Affleck, Jennifer Lawrence and Daniel Day-Lewis, and a mixed bag for viewers. The awards show was long and uneven, and?also a puzzling night in many respects. We tackled some of the unanswered questions that remained after the Dolby Theatre emptied.
What was up with Michelle Obama's cameo?
Jack Nicholson took the stage to announce the best picture winner, but then the show cut to a satellite feed of first lady Michelle Obama live at the White House, wearing a glittery gown and announcing that "Argo" was the Oscar winner. The Hollywood Reporter writes that movie mogul Harvey Weinstein and Oscar producers worked the deal out with the first lady's staff and managed to keep it secret. Obama had been attending the?National Governors Association Dinner and stepped out to handle the award announcement. What we found most interesting: Nicholson had a backup envelope with the winner's name in it just in case the White House feed was somehow lost. Obama herself later tweeted, "It was a thrill to announce the?#Oscars2013?best picture winner from the?@WhiteHouse! Congratulations Argo!"

Was Andy Griffith left out of the In Memoriam segment?
Yes he was. While Griffith, who died in July, is best known for TV roles, he also starred in feature films, including "Hearts of the West," "Rustlers' Rhapsody," "Waitress" and others. Also left off was Larry Hagman, whose films included "Fail-Safe," "Nixon" and "Primary Colors." Phyllis Diller, Sherman Hemsley and Conrad Bain didn't make the cut either. But fans of Whitney Houston need not complain: She was in last year's In Memoriam segment, having died just weeks before the 2012 Oscars.
Why do the Oscars love 'Chicago' so much?
The show's theme was music in film, but you'd be forgiven if you thought its theme was "Hey, Wasn't The 2002 Best Picture Winner Really Great?" Catherine Zeta-Jones performed "Chicago" hit "All That Jazz"?and a group of the film's cast members reunited on stage as part of the show's tribute to musicals. Critics were quick to point out that the current Oscar producers Craig?Zadan and Neil?Meron also produced "Chicago."?Wrote TV critic Tim Goodman on Twitter, "Maybe I'll wake up tomorrow to find the Academy charged Zadan and Meron the cost of five commercials for that (expletive) 'Chicago' self-love."

Cast members Richard Gere, Renee Zellweger, Queen Latifah and Catherine Zeta-Jones of the 2002 Oscar-winning musical "Chicago" announced the award for best original score. Why so much love for a decade-old film? Ask the Oscar producers.
Was this the longest show ever?
Not by a long shot. Sunday's show lasted three hours, 35 minutes.?According to the L.A. Times, five shows were longer, with the 2002 show clocking in at four hours, 23 minutes, and two other years also passing the four-hour mark.
Wait, Scarlett Johansson sang one of the nominated songs?
Yep. Johansson sang best original song nominee "Before My Time," from the climate-change documentary "Chasing Ice." She was accompanied by violinist Joshua Bell on the song. It didn't win, but songwriter J. Ralph, who also worked with Johansson on a song for a 2010 film about autism, calls the actress "a world-class singer in every regard."
What tripped up Jennifer Lawrence?
The best actress winner wiped out while walking to receive her award, then joked that the audience only gave her a standing ovation because they felt sorry for her. What caused the fall? E! Online quotes Lawrence as saying, "What do you mean, what happened? Look at this dress." Her pink Dior gown was apparently just too much volume for the 22-year-old, at least when it came to stair-climbing.

Why was Kristen Stewart limping?
If you saw "Twilight" star Stewart on either the red carpet, hopping from foot to foot as the paparazzi cameras flashed, or watched her closely when she came on stage with Daniel Radcliffe, you probably spotted a hitch in her walk. Her makeup artist told People magazine that Stewart cut her foot severely on broken glass, and indeed, she sported crutches on the red carpet.?

Microsoft is working towards a public preview version of Windows Blue. Sources familiar with Microsoft's plans have revealed that the software giant is aggressively targeting a summer launch date for Windows Blue, ensuring its development cycle is short. Microsoft recently passed Milestone 1 for Windows Blue, but the company is now readying a Milestone Preview which will form the basis for a public preview
The public preview, first reported by win8china, will launch within the next few months, allowing existing Windows 8 users to test and provide feedback before Microsoft readies the final version of Windows Blue. We understand that Microsoft is aiming to only have one preview release for Blue. Features are still being prepared for Blue, but one of the biggest changes is an improvement to the search charm functionality.
Bing will play a big part in Windows Blue
We're told that the Bing team is working closely on Windows Blue to improve search in a significant way. A number of scenarios are being targeted, including the ability for users to search for a movie and have apps surface that content and provide a quick way to play it. The current implementation of search in Windows 8 supports deep search within apps, but users currently have to select those apps to search within them. Blue will expand on that, providing apps are updated to support it, by extending the search abilities of the OS.
Blue is expected to be made available to existing Windows 8 users by the end of the summer, with support for new 7- and 8-inch devices and Internet Explorer 11 built-in. Microsoft is also preparing a Blue update to its Windows Phone operating system and other services as a project to further integrate all of its software offerings.

Supporters cheer comedian-turned-political agitator, Beppe Grillo, as he arrives for his final rally in Rome's Piazza San Giovanni on Friday. Italians are fed up, and no one is tapping that emotional vein better than comic-turned-political agitator Grillo and his anti-establishment 5 Star Movement.

?
ROME - Italians began voting on Sunday in one of the most closely watched elections in years, with markets nervous about whether it will produce a strong government to pull Italy out of recession and help resolve the euro zone debt crisis.?
A huge final rally by anti-establishment-comedian-turned-politician Beppe Grillo on Friday before a campaigning ban kicked in has highlighted public anger at traditional parties and added to uncertainty about the election outcome.?
Voters started casting their ballots at 7 a.m. (1 a.m. ET). Polling booths will remain open until 9 p.m. (4 p.m. ET) on Sunday and between?6 a.m. and 2 p.m.?(midnight and 10 a.m. ET) on Monday. Exit polls will come out soon after voting ends and official results are expected by early Tuesday.?

Comedian-turned-political agitator, Beppe Grillo, speaks during his final rally in Rome's Piazza San Giovanni on Friday.
The election is being followed closely by financial markets with memories still fresh of the potentially catastrophic debt crisis that brought technocrat Prime Minister Mario Monti to power more than a year ago.?
Italy, the euro zone's third-largest economy, is stuck in deep recession, struggling under a public debt burden second only to Greece's in the 17-member currency bloc and with a public weary of more than a year of harsh austerity policies.?
Economic austerity has fueled anger among Italians grappling with rising unemployment and shrinking disposable incomes, encouraging many to turn to Grillo, who has tapped into a national mood of disenchantment.?
Final polls published two weeks ago showed center-left leader Pier Luigi Bersani with a 5-point lead, but analysts disagree about whether he will be able to form a stable majority that can push though the economic reforms Italy needs.?
Bersani is now thought to be just a few points ahead of center-right rival Silvio Berlusconi, the four-times prime minister who has promised tax refunds and staged a media blitz in an attempt to win back voters.?
Berlusconi criticism?
Berlusconi hogged the headlines on Sunday after he broke the campaign silence the previous evening attack magistrates, saying they were "more dangerous than the Sicilian mafia" and had invented allegations he held sex parties to discredit him.?
The 76-year-old billionaire, who faces several trials on charges ranging from fraud to sex with an underage prostitute, was criticized by his election rivals for making the comments after the campaigning ban had come into force.?

Silvio Berlusconi, leader of People of Freedom party, appears on a screen during his political rally in Naples Friday.
While the center left is still expected to gain control of the lower house, thanks to rules that guarantee a strong majority to whichever party wins the most votes nationally, a much closer battle will be fought in the Senate, which any government also needs to control to be able to pass laws.?
Seats in the upper house are awarded on a region-by-region basis, meaning that support in key regions can decisively influence the overall result.?
Pollsters still believe the most likely outcome is a center-left government headed by Bersani and possibly backed by Monti, who is leading a centrist coalition.?
But strong campaigning by Berlusconi and the fiery Grillo, who has drawn tens of thousands to his election rallies, have thrown the election wide open, causing concern that there may be no clear winner.?
Surveys have shown up to 5 million voters are expected to make up their minds at the last minute, adding to uncertainty.?
Italy's Interior Ministry urged some 47 million eligible voters to not let bad weather forecasts put them off, and said it was prepared to handle snowy conditions in some northern regions to ensure everyone had a chance to vote.?

Attackers are using fake versions of a recently released report about a Chinese cyberespionage group as bait in new spear-phishing attacks that target Japanese and Chinese users.
The report was released Tuesday by security firm Mandiant and documents in great detail the cyberespionage campaigns conducted since 2006 by a hacker group known as the Comment Crew against more than 100 companies and organizations from different industries.
Mandiant refers to the group as APT1 (Advanced Persistent Threat 1) and claims in the report that it's likely a secret Shanghai-based cyberespionage unit of the Chinese Army?the People's Liberation Army (PLA)?code-named "Unit 61398."
The Chinese government has dismissed Mandiant's claims as groundless. However, the report received a lot of attention from people in the IT security industry, as well as from the general public.
It seems that this publicity has now led to attackers deciding to use the report as bait in new targeted attacks.
Two different spear-phishing attacks were discovered last week using emails with malicious attachments that masqueraded as the Mandiant report, said Aviv Raff, the chief technology officer of security firm Seculert.
One attack targeted Japanese-speaking users and involved emails with an attachment called Mandiant.pdf. This PDF file exploits a vulnerability in Adobe Reader that was patched by Adobe in an emergency update Wednesday, security researchers from Seculert said in a blog post.
The malware installed by the exploit connects to a command-and-control server hosted in Korea, but also contacts some Japanese websites, probably in an attempt to trick security products, the Seculert researchers said.
Symantec has also detected and analyzed the spear-phishing attack. "The email purports to be from someone in the media recommending the report," Symantec researcher Joji Hamada said in a blog post. However, it would be evident for a Japanese person that the email was not written by a native Japanese speaker, he said.
Hamada pointed out that similar tactics have been used in the past. In one incident back in 2011, hackers used a research paper about targeted attacks published by Symantec as bait. "They did this by spamming targets with the actual whitepaper along with malware hidden in an archive attachment," Hamada said.
The second spear-phishing attack detected targets Chinese-speaking users and uses a malicious attachment called "Mandiant_APT2_Report.pdf."
According to an analysis of the PDF file by researcher Brandon Dixon of security consultancy firm 9b+, the document exploits an older Adobe Reader vulnerability that was discovered and patched in 2011.
The malware installed on the system establishes a connection to a domain that currently points to a server in China, Dixon said via email. "The malware provides attackers with the ability to execute commands on the victim's system."
The domain name contacted by this malware was also used in the past in attacks that targeted Tibetan activists, Seculert's Raff said. Those older attacks installed both Windows and Mac OS X malware, he said.
Greg Walton, a researcher from MalwareLab, a security outfit that tracks politically motivated malware attacks, said on Twitter that the Mandiant-themed spear-phishing attack targeted journalists in China. This information could not be confirmed by Raff or Dixon, who said that they don't have copies of the original spam emails, only of the malicious attachment they contained.

CHICAGO (AP) ? A manager at a Chicago mall where the boy band Mindless Behavior signed autographs for fans says a disturbance that left two people with minor injuries was "totally unrelated" to the event.
Ford City Mall senior general manager John Sarama says a group of older youths caused Saturday's disturbance, not the young girls and parents who attended the boy band appearance.
Police spokesman Veejay Zala says multiple arrests were made but none for serious charges. He says officers evacuated the mall and closed it for the rest of the day.
Sarama says the Mindless Behavior event ended about 45 minutes before the disturbance. Fans who bought the group's new CD during a pre-sale were given posters for band members to sign.
The group's publicist couldn't immediately be reached for comment.

WARSAW, Poland (AP) ? Wojciech Inglot, a Polish chemist and businessman who founded and ran a cosmetics company, Inglot, that grew into an international success with nearly 400 stores in 50 countries, has died. He was 57.
Inglot died unexpectedly Saturday after suffering internal hemorrhaging, a longtime friend of Inglot's and associate of the company, Mariusz Ziomecki, told The Associated Press. Inglot was rushed to a hospital in Przemysl, the eastern Polish city where his cosmetics are produced, but doctors were unable to save him.
Inglot was born in Przemysl on June 11, 1955. He studied chemistry at Krakow's prestigious Jagellonian University. After graduation he began his first chemical manufacturing operation in 1983, when Poland was still under communist rule.
After Poland began its transition to a market economy in 1989, Inglot turned to producing cosmetics, finding success first at home and then internationally with a range of nail polishes, eye shadows and other products. Today the Inglot logo can be seen large-scale at Times Square in new York City and the cosmetics are sold in nearly 400 boutiques in malls in some 50 countries, including at Macy's.
Recently Inglot found unexpected success with a breathable nail polish that became a surprise hit with Muslim women. The enamel, called O2M ? for Oxygen and Moisture ? allows air and water to pass through it, unlike traditional varnishes that completely occlude the nail.
Traditional varnishes pose a religious problem for observant Muslim women because of prayers five times a day that require a pre-prayer washing ritual. Islamic scholars have long said water must run over the hands and arms, even the finger nails, leading many women to avoid using polish.
It was developed about four years ago but started to become a hit with Muslim women after an Islamic scholar in November declared that it was permissible under Muslim law because it allowed water to reach the nail.
Inglot told the AP in an interview last week that he developed the breathable polish with health-conscious women in mind, and that he was taken by surprise by the reception it was getting with some Muslim women.
Inglot is survived by his mother, a brother and a sister. A funeral is planned for noon on Wednesday in the Salezjans Church in Przemysl, the company said in a statement.
