Area colleges are well represented on the watch lists for various postseason awards in college football.
Three University of Florida players were named to lists for two national awards on Monday. Quarterback Jeff Driskel was named to the 77th annual Maxwell Award watch list, while defensive lineman Dominique Easley and defensive back Loucheiz Purifoy were both named to 19th annual Bednarik Award watch list.
The Maxwell Award is given each year to the college player of the year. The Bednarik Award is presented to the nation?s top college defensive player each season. Semifinalists for both lists will be announced on Oct. 29, while the three finalists for each award will be released on Nov. 25. The winners will be announced at the annual Home Depot College Football Awards Show held on Dec. 12.
Driskel, a junior, enters his second season as the starting quarterback. He passed for 1,646 yards with 12 touchdowns and five interceptions as a sophomore, while also rushing for 413 yards and four touchdowns.
Easley, a senior, has played in 29 games with 23 starts in his career. He has 67 tackles, 16 tackles-for-loss and 5.5 sacks in his three seasons. Last season, he led UF with four sacks.
Purifoy, a junior, has made 26 appearances for UF with 12 starts at cornerback and one start at wide receiver. He is the team?s leading returning tackler after racking up 51 tackles last year, while also forcing three fumbles and breaking up five passes.
Florida State senior defensive back Lamarcus Joyner, senior linebacker Christian Jones and junior defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan are each on the watch list for the Bednarik Award.
Joyner is making the switch from safety to cornerback. In three seasons, Joyner has played in 41 games, getting 128 tackles and six interceptions. He also has 1,150 career kick-return yards.
Jones led the team in tackles with 95. For his career, Jones has played in 41 games with 169 total tackles and six sacks.
Jernigan, a former Columbia High standout, had eight tackles for loss and 46 total tackles.
Georgia senior quarterback Aaron Murray and sophomore tailback Todd Gurley have been named to the Maxwell Award watch list.
Murray ranked second in the nation in passing efficiency at 174.82. He became the first Southeastern Conference quarterback in history to have three consecutive 3,000-yard passing seasons.
In his 28 wins as a starter, he has 74 touchdowns to just 16 interceptions. Murray is the SEC?s leading active player in total offensive yards (10,301), completions (696), touchdown responsibility (105), touchdown passes (95) and passing yards (10,091).
Gurley became the 12th Bulldog to rush for 1,000 yards in a season and the first since Knowshon Moreno in 2008. Gurley had 1,385 yards, which ranks sixth in school history for a single season, and 17 touchdowns (a Georgia freshman record) on 222 carries.
Only Gurley and Herschel Walker rushed for 1,000-yards in their freshman seasons.
Gurley had nine games last season where he rushed for at least 100 yards, which ranks third in school history for a season.
Charley Trippi (1946) and Walker (1982) are former Bulldogs who have won the Maxwell Award.
Central Florida junior quarterback Blake Bortles was selected to the Maxwell Award watch list.
Bortles became the first UCF quarterback to throw for at least 3,000 yards since 2002. He was 251 for 399 with 3,059 yards, 25 touchdowns and seven interceptions.
