Mid-Columbia Small Business Awards nominations sought ? Tri ...

Nominations are now being accepted for the 18th Annual Small Business of the Year Awards.

The awards are presented annually to locally-owned and operated, for-profit small businesses with fewer than 60 full-time employees. The awards committee seeks businesses that have a core fundamental of honesty, fairness and ethics in their business practices and show concern for employees and customers.

An ?Intent to Nominate? form must be submitted by March 22, with the full nomination packets due by 5 p.m. April 4. Nomination forms are available at the website at www.midcolumbiasmallbiz.com. Businesses can be nominated by customers, vendors or employees, or can nominate themselves for the awards.

The annual awards began in 1996, in part as a reaction to Hanford layoffs to support the area?s small business entrepreneurs. Two of the members of the original awards committee ? Debbie Bone-Harris and Gary Spanner ? are still actively involved in producing the event.

The judging committee, which is completely independent of the event?s organizational committee, scores the nominations based on three criteria: employee relations, customer relations and community relations.

After reviewing and scoring the nomination packets, the judging committee chooses the top scoring six to eight nominees for a site visit.

According to Debbie Bone-Harris, of the Mid-Columbia Small Business Awards committee, the scoring is traditionally very close, so the site visits are a very important part in the process and those visits generally determine which businesses win the gold, silver and bronze awards.

Last year?s Gold winner was Sylvan Learning Center in Kennewick. Tri-Cities Digestive Center in Kennewick earned the Silver award and Pediatrics for You, also in Kennewick, was presented with the bronze award.

This year?s awards will be presented at the 18th Annual Mid-Columbia Small Business Awards Banquet, which will be May 9 at The TRAC in Pasco. Banquet reservations can be made by calling the Tri-Cities Hispanic Chamber of Commerce at 542-0933 or contacting the chamber by email at tchcoc@hotmail.com.
